Evidence-Based Hoof Care
Horses do it better barefoot
Why Evidence Matters
Hoof care has long been shaped by tradition — methods passed down without questioning whether they truly serve the horse. Today, the internet adds another layer of confusion: countless voices, conflicting advice, and strong opinions on every platform. For owners, it can feel impossible to know who to trust.
At Primarily Hooves, we believe horses deserve better. Our work is grounded in science, guided by research, and proven through years of hands-on rehabilitation. Instead of adding to the noise, we filter it — focusing on what’s been demonstrated to work for the horse’s health and longevity.
Inspired by Dr. Robert Bowker
Much of our trimming philosophy draws from the groundbreaking research of Dr. Robert Bowker, whose studies revealed how blood flow, caudal development, and functional loading affect long-term soundness.
By applying his principles, we don’t just make hooves “look right” — we trim with the internal structures in mind, supporting the horse from the inside out.
Our Approach
-
Form Follows Function
Every trim decision is based on how the hoof works in motion, not just how it looks standing still. -
Caudal Development First
Growth of the frog, digital cushion, and lateral cartilages is our top priority, since these structures are key to long-term health and comfort. -
Blood Flow & Perfusion
Hooves aren’t rigid blocks — they’re living, vascular structures. Our trims support circulation and shock absorption with every step. -
Evidence Over Opinion
We reference peer-reviewed research, case studies, and our own rehab outcomes, choosing approaches proven to benefit the horse.
What This Means for Owners
Evidence-based hoof care gives owners more than a “pretty trim.” It offers:
-
Clarity in a world full of conflicting information.
-
A framework for understanding why your horse’s hoof looks and functions the way it does.
-
Confidence that decisions are based on research and proven outcomes.
-
A clear path forward when facing lameness, imbalances, or early warning signs of dysfunction.
